Water and sanitation are human rights and should not be weaponised in war. But this is just what Israel has been doing since 2023 in Gaza. Both the USA and Israel have also been viciously working against UNRWA & other aid agencies, taking away basic lifelines to water, sanitation and health. The immediate and horrible impacts are in Gaza. Yet, given that shit flows, ultimately pollution and contamination won’t just stay in Gaza but will also end up in Israeli waters and beyond.
UNRWA: Freshwater supplies in Gaza are severely limited and polluted, according to UN Environment Programme. The collapse of sewage treatment infrastructure has likely increased groundwater contamination, with major implications for environmental and human health.
UNRWA continues to distribute potable and domestic water across Gaza, reaching over 700,000 displaced people daily between 1 and 15 March.
