PPDF’s WWD2026 with Nigeria’s Fishermen, From the Nigerian Blue Community Peace Point Development Foundation: Peace Point Development Foundation-PPD

From the Nigerian Blue Community Peace Point Development Foundation:

Peace Point Development Foundation-PPDF marked 2026 World Water Day with fishers in Iwopom Opolom Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

It was an opportunity for the fishers to express their long term experiences and how their source of livelihoods are negatively impacted by Climate Change.
According to them, in the past they didn’t need to go far before they could obtain enough catch to take care of their domestic and commercial needs.
Today, they have to travel far and days with nothing to come home with.
They enumerated some of the causes to include activities of the multinationals that have led to increased oil spills and gas flaring, nipa palm inversion, use of chemicals by fellow fishers in fishing, industrial fishing, insecurity along the coastal ways etc.
However, the fishers acknowledged the facts that when it comes to climate change impact, women, children and Persons with Disabilities are most valuable and needs to be carried along when discussing climate change issues.

They promised to extend the sensitization to their members who were not part of the engagement.
