In the context of World Water Day and the global call HRWatSan2026 for the human rights to water and sanitation, another organisation in India took the Blue Community pledge: VIKASH from Odisha.
VIKASH is state level registered, non-governmental, not-for-profit voluntary organization dedicated to the cause of Rural and Urban Social Development. It was established 1990 by a group of social workers to campaign for rural and urban development and to help people to overcome poverty, illiteracy and disease. VIKASH firmly believes in ensuring that the support facilities provided by Government and other development agencies actually reach the needy poor people and to ensure that it is done with due respect given to the person’s dignity and rights. The organisation is working closely with the community and extends its support services to one and all whenever in need.
The mission statement of VIKASH reads:
«VIKASH visualizes a society free from poverty, illiteracy, diseases and violence. It has a proactive vision to act as catalyst to focus on needs and priorities of people and to rebuild the rural society through empowerment of women and youths. Sustainable development of the state would be achieved through people’s participation in development programs and effective utilization of natural resources.»
Hygiene, Sanitation, Livelihood and Agriculture & Water Management are since years key components of VIKASH’s work. VIKASH operates throughout the geographical areas of 30 Districts of Odisha. VIKASH is also an Associate Member of Water Conflicts fourm in india Pashan Pune (MAHARASTRA) and the District Water Sanitation Mission Govt. Odisha (DWSM) WASH is a funding partner to VIKASH.
Gokul Chandra Dash, Secretary of VIKSAH, states:
“VIKASH has joined forces with the Blue Community to reduce the gap on the Water & Sanitation Issue and connect the Community to address the issue properly in preparation for future technocrats and challenges.”
The Blue Community welcomes VIKAS in its network, growing stronger in South Asia and especially in India. With VIKASH, the network in India’s Odisha state already counts six Blue Communities, laying a strong ground working on water and sanitation challenges and to promote the core Blue Community values.
