Global Coalition Demands Constitutional Water Rights Ahead of UN Summit.

A growing global coalition of civil society groups is running a coordinated campaign to urge national governments to enshrine the human rights to water and sanitation in their constitutions, noting that international recognition has not translated into local access.

The initiative, titled HRWatSan2026, is scheduled to formally launch on World Water Day (March 22). It aims to build a drumbeat of political pressure leading up to the United Nations Water Conference in December 2026.

Water activists argue that, despite the UN recognizing water and sanitation as rights, there are no enforceable national laws, leaving billions at risk.

“Sixteen years after the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 64/292, it is time for states to comply,” says Roland Brunner, coordinator for Blue-Community.net, the network spearheading the call. “We are calling for these rights to be enshrined in every constitution. It is time for action, not just words,” further notes Brunner.
