Dwindling springs: 80 guests discuss threatened water cycles.
To mark World Water Day on March 22, the Blue Community Büdingen working group organized the fourth Büdingen Water Day at the Novum cinema, the city reports in a press release. Around 80 citizens accepted the invitation to an afternoon at the cinema under the motto “Water is Love,” thus sending a clear message about the responsible use of water.
In their welcoming remarks, Mayor Benjamin Harris and Jochen Heyermann, head of the Blue Community working group and operations manager of the Büdingen municipal utilities, emphasized the great importance of the topic of water.
They emphasized that water, as the basis of all life, requires special protection and that the sustainable management of this essential resource is a shared responsibility of politics, administration and the public.
Large audience participation
The highlight of the event was the screening of the documentary “Water is Love.” The film impressively demonstrates how closely functioning water cycles are linked to climate, the environment, and human life. At the same time, it highlights the extent to which natural water cycles have already been impacted by human intervention and what possibilities exist for stabilizing them again.
Following the film screening, a discussion with the audience took place, moderated by Jan Eckhardt (a teacher of politics and economics at the Wolfgang-Ernst-Gymnasium) and Jochen Heyermann. The numerous contributions reflected a great interest in the topic. It became clear that water resources are visibly changing in the region: springs are drying up or carrying less water than in the past.
Key measures mentioned included reducing surface runoff, retaining rainwater, and unsealing surfaces. These approaches could help improve infiltration and strengthen natural water cycles. Concrete ideas from the audience, such as using inner-city areas for urban gardening, also demonstrated how local engagement can contribute to the sustainable use of water.
The Blue Community working group draws a positive conclusion: The fourth Büdingen Water Day once again offered a good opportunity for exchange, information, and raising awareness about the responsible use of water. The town of Büdingen has been part of the international Blue Community movement since 2022. This movement advocates for the protection of water as a human right, the responsible use of drinking water, and the strengthening of public water supplies.
