From the Blue Community Mayurbhanj Biological Research (MBR), India:
SAVE WATER, NOT TAX IT.
A National Campaign for Water Justice and Sustainability.
On the occasion of World Earth Day, 22nd April 2026, Mayurbhanj Biological Research (MBR), a socio-scientific not-for-profit organization, proudly launches a National-Level Campaign: “No GST, No Tax on Water”—a call to recognize water not as a commodity, but as a fundamental human right.
Water is life. It sustains ecosystems, supports agriculture, drives livelihoods, and ensures public health. Yet, in many parts of India, access to clean drinking water remains a daily struggle. In such a context, the imposition of taxes—direct or indirect—on water services, packaging, and distribution raises critical ethical and social concerns. Taxing water is not just an economic issue; it is a question of equity, dignity, and survival.
Mayurbhanj Biological Research (MBR), recognized internationally as a Blue Community Achiever-22nd March 2026, stands firmly on the principles that water is a shared public trust, must be accessible to all, and should remain free from privatization and excessive commercialization. Through this campaign, MBR seeks to mobilize public opinion, influence policy frameworks, and generate international attention toward ensuring water justice in India.
Under the leadership of Founder Samir Kumar Sahu, this campaign envisions a unified national voice advocating for:
- Complete removal of GST and any form of taxation on water, especially drinking water and essential supply systems.
- Recognition of water as a basic human necessity, not a luxury good.
- Strengthening public water infrastructure and equitable distribution systems.
- Promotion of sustainable water management aligned with environmental conservation.
This initiative is not merely a protest—it is a movement for change. It calls upon policymakers, environmentalists, researchers, civil society, and citizens across the nation to join hands in safeguarding one of our most vital natural resources. By positioning water outside the tax regime, India can set a global example of prioritizing human welfare over revenue generation.
The campaign also aims to build international pressure and motivation, aligning with global sustainability goals and water rights movements. As climate change intensifies water scarcity, it is imperative that governments adopt people-centric policies that ensure affordability and access for all.
MBR’s effort reflects the spirit of Earth Day—protecting our planet by protecting its most precious resource. Through awareness drives, policy dialogues, research advocacy, and community engagement, this campaign will echo across villages, towns, and cities, especially in regions like eastern Odisha , Mayurbhanj District more particular to the Home of our beloved Her Excellency Smt. Droupadi Murmu, President of Republic of India ,where water conservation and accessibility are deeply interconnected with livelihoods and ecological balance of Similipal Biosphere Reserve the lifeline of Odisha and Jharkhand state of India.
Water connects all aspects of life—Jal (water), Jamin (land), Jungle (forest), Jan (people), and Jeevan (life). Protecting water means protecting our future. Let Mayurbhanj Biological Research (MBR), lead by example, showing that sustainable, community-driven water management is not only possible but essential for which the “National Campaign for Water Justice and Sustainability” is justified and we seek your participation, contribution and support for this important movement.
