World Earth Day Celebration 2026: Inspiring Young Minds through Art and Action.

On the occasion of World Earth Day, Mayurbhanj Biological Research (MBR) organized a environmental awareness program on 22nd April 2026 at the historic Sri Ram Chandra Library. The event brought together 100 numbers of young minds from the age group of 8 to 15 years in a creative drawing competition centered on the theme: “Save Earth, Save Tree, Save Tiger.” The initiative aimed to instill environmental consciousness among children through art, imagination, and active participation.

The program was led by Samir Kumar Sahu, Executive Director, Mayurbhanj Biological Research (MBR), who played a key role in conceptualizing and organizing the event. The inaugural session was graced by distinguished guest Prof (Dr.) Banja Mohanty, a respected academician and former Principal of M.P C (Auto) Collage, Baripada, whose presence added intellectual depth to the program. The programme was graced by the presence of notable dignitaries present included Bijay Mahapatra, Jayanta Pal, Pranati Patnayak, Mrs.Kanika Das, Er.Debendra Singh and Suresh Das and all actively associated with Abhay Dan -MBR’s “Go-Green Campaign Initiatives”.

Other program volunteers who actively participated in the event and interacted with the students and facility the event. They appreciated the creativity and awareness reflected in the drawings and encouraged the participants to continue engaging in environmental activities.

The inauguration ceremony began with a warm welcome to the guests and participants, followed by the formal lighting of the lamp by Prof. (Dr.) Banja Mohanty and Samir Kumar Sahu, symbolizing the illumination of knowledge and awareness. In his inaugural address, Dr. Mohanty emphasized the urgent need for biodiversity conservation, especially in ecologically sensitive regions like Mayurbhanj, which is home to the renowned Similipal Biosphere Reserve. He highlighted the importance of protecting forests and wildlife, particularly, water, tree and tigers, which are not only apex predators but also indicators of a healthy ecosystem.

Samir Kumar Sahu, in his address, spoke passionately about the role of youth in shaping a sustainable future. He stressed that environmental awareness must begin at an early age and that creative platforms like drawing competitions can effectively engage children in understanding complex ecological issues. He also shared MBR’s ongoing efforts in conservation, research, and community engagement, and encouraged students to become “young environmental ambassadors.”

The drawing competition witnessed enthusiastic participation from students across different schools in Baripada and nearby areas. The young artists expressed their thoughts and concerns through colorful and imaginative artworks, depicting themes such as deforestation, climate change, wildlife protection, and sustainable living. Many drawings beautifully illustrated the interconnectedness of Earth, trees, and tigers, reinforcing the central message of the event.

An important action component of the program included a brief awareness session on practical environmental actions. Students were encouraged to adopt simple yet impactful habits such as planting trees, reducing plastic usage, conserving water, and respecting wildlife. The organizers also discussed the significance of protecting local biodiversity and the role of communities in safeguarding natural resources.

The venue, Sri Ram Chandra Library, served as an ideal setting for the event. Known for its historical significance and central location in Baripada, the library has long been a hub for knowledge and community engagement. Its support in providing space for the program greatly contributed to the successful organised of the event.

The event was made possible through the regular financial support of Abhay Dan (Trust), New Delhi, whose commitment to social and environmental causes enabled MBR to organize the program effectively. Their contribution reflects the importance of collaborative efforts in promoting sustainability and environmental education. Mayurbhanj Biological Research (MBR) is the Associate partner of Abhay Dan (Trust),New Delhi.

At the conclusion of the program, winners of the drawing competition were announced and awarded certificates and eco-friendly prizes. All participants were appreciated for their creativity and commitment to the cause. The program ended with a vote of thanks, acknowledging the contributions of guests, participants, organizers, and supporters.

Conclusion and Future Action:

The World Earth Day celebration by MBR successfully created a platform for young minds to engage with environmental issues in a meaningful way. It not only raised awareness but also inspired action among the participants. The program highlighted the importance of integrating environmental education with creativity and community involvement.

Looking ahead, MBR plans to expand such initiatives by organizing regular eco-clubs in schools, conducting tree plantation drives, and facilitating field visits to nearby ecological sites like Similipal. The organization also aims to collaborate with educational institutions and stakeholders to build a sustained movement for environmental conservation in the region.
In a world facing increasing ecological challenges, empowering the younger generation with knowledge, values, and a sense of responsibility is crucial. Events like this serve as stepping stones toward a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future—where the message “Save Earth, Save Tree, Save Tiger” becomes a way of life rather than just a theme.
