Environmental degradation leaves billions without life-sustaining water and sanitation.
Around 2.1 billion people worldwide lack access to safely managed drinking water, and 3.4 billion lack safely managed sanitation, highlights a new UN policy brief on realizing the rights to water and sanitation.
The brief and its key messages were prepared by UN Human Rights on behalf of UN-Water, an interagency coordination mechanism on water and sanitation that brings together 36 UN entities and 52 international partners. They are intended for use by national government agencies, local and regional governments, and policymakers, among others, who design and implement laws and policies to address environmental degradation, including climate change, in relation to water and sanitation.
