Guterres Says Investing in Water Can Save Millions of Lives Annually.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said that improving access to clean water and sanitation could save more than 1.4 million lives each year while reducing disease and supporting economic growth.

In a statement, Guterres described water as the foundation of all life and a basic human right, stressing the urgent need for global investment in water systems.

He said enhanced access to safe water and sanitation services would not only protect public health but also help restore ecosystems and strengthen communities.

“Investing in water is investing in the future of communities and countries,” he said.

The remarks come as many regions around the world continue to face water scarcity, poor sanitation infrastructure and increasing pressure from climate change, raising concerns among international organizations about long-term sustainability and human health.
