The panel features three exciting presentations:

The first contribution, Data Activism and Participatory AI Against Feminicide, by Isadora Cruxen, Catherine D’Ignazio, Helena Suárez Val, and Silvana Fumega, introduces the Data Against Feminicide project. The team will discusses how activists and civil society organisations across the Americas and Sub-Saharan Africa produce data documenting the gender-related killings of cisgender and transgender women and girls.

The second presentation, Media Narratives Against Feminicide, by Harini Suresh, Yujia Gao, and Alessandra Jungs de Almeida, will examine participatory workshops where journalists and activists annotate media coverage of gender-based violence. Their work explores how feminist epistemology can challenge knowledge hierarchies and encourage community-led data practices while reflecting on the tensions involved in applying feminist principles in AI development.

Finally, Trans Activists’ Transformative Data Science, by Nikko Stevens and Amelia Lee Doğan, will present findings from a qualitative interview study with 16 trans activists working in trans-led and trans-serving organisations in the United States. The project examines how activists engage with data through practices such as resolving, researching, recording, and refusing data. The presentation will show how these practices reflect restorative and transformative approaches to data science that centre the needs and experiences of trans communities.

We’d be delighted if you could join us for this discussion and engage with these inspiring interventions.
