The United Nations World Water Development Report 2026, coordinated by UNESCO on behalf of UN-Water, highlights the urgent need to address inequalities in access to water and sanitation. Titled “Water for All People: Equal Rights and Opportunities,” the report underscores that safe and affordable water is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of sustainable development. Despite progress, millions of people, especially women and girls, continue to bear the burden of water collection and limited access to sanitation services. The report calls for stronger policies, improved data, and inclusive water governance that ensures equal participation in decision-making and better water management for resilient and equitable societies.
For Pakistan, the report’s findings are particularly significant. Persistent challenges in water availability, safe drinking water, and sanitation services, especially in rural and climate-vulnerable areas, highlight the need for inclusive and gender-responsive water management. Strengthening community participation, improving water governance, and investing in sustainable water infrastructure will be key to advancing water security and equitable development across the country.
