Climate Change Adaptation Vs Climate Change Resilience | Webinar 3 of Monthly CCA Webinar Series.
Climate change is accelerating across the Asia-Pacific, but are we responding in the right way? While “adaptation” and “resilience” are often used interchangeably, they represent fundamentally different approaches to addressing climate risks—and understanding this distinction is key to building effective, long-term solutions.
In this third webinar of our series on Advancing Climate Action, Community Resilience & Knowledge Collaboration in Asia Pacific, organized in collaboration with the Indian Blue Community PRISM, the Blue Community Network, and CARN-AP, we unpacked the critical differences between Climate Change Adaptation and Climate Change Resilience, and explored how these concepts shape real-world interventions across humanitarian and development contexts.
While adaptation focuses on specific, often short-term measures—such as climate-resilient infrastructure or drought-resistant crops—resilience goes a step further. It is about strengthening the ability of communities and systems to absorb shocks, recover, and transform in the face of ongoing climate stresses.
Confusing the two can lead to gaps in policy, ineffective programming, and missed opportunities for sustainable impact. In this webinar, we discussed:
- Key concepts and frameworks of climate change adaptation and resilience
- How adaptation measures differ from resilience-building approaches in scope and timeframe
- Real-world examples from Asia-Pacific humanitarian and development programmes
- Policy and institutional gaps in translating resilience into practice
- The role of social science, anthropology, and community knowledge in shaping responses
- Pathways for integrating adaptation and resilience into disaster risk reduction and development planning
This session highlights why technical solutions alone are not enough, and why addressing underlying vulnerabilities such as inequality, governance, and social dynamics is essential for building true climate resilience.
Watch the full session to better understand how we can move from short-term adaptation to long-term, transformative resilience in a rapidly changing climate.
