Mexico formalizes water policy with regulatory targets through 2030.
The Mexican government published the National Water Program 2026-2030, formally turning its strategy to strengthen regulation, infrastructure, sanitation, climate adaptation, and access to drinking water into public policy.
Published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF), the program incorporates objectives, strategies, indicators and mandatory lines of action for federal agencies, unlike the 2024-2030 National Water Plan, presented by President Claudia Sheinbaum and the National Water Commission (Conagua), but never formalized in the DOF.
The document acknowledges a scenario of increasing water stress in the country: 104 of the 757 basins present availability problems, 286 aquifers no longer have water available, and regions such as the Valley of Mexico record water pressure levels above 128%.
