Water that is in surplus in the city but in short supply in the countryside: “One day closer to the next drought”.
The European Commission has once again taken Spain to task for failing to treat and purify wastewater in 114 urban areas, despite water being a strategic resource.
The unprecedented levels of water accumulated in Spain’s reservoirs following last winter’s series of storms are a mirage because, as Pedro Parias, secretary-general of Feragua, the association of irrigation communities in Andalusia, warns, “we are one day closer to the next drought”. The use of reclaimed water (optimately treated wastewater) could be another lifeline for those shipwrecked by climate change, as well as preventing another complaint from Brussels against Spain, such as the one lodged last Wednesday.
