The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation has been reaching out to the Member States and UN Agencies that are actively involved in the organization of the UN Water Conference 2026, asking for social participation and a human rights based approach to the Water Conference.
As discussed in previous meetings, the next step in this process would be to distribute a letter on behalf of the Social Platform’s organizations, supporting the demands already posed by the Special Rapporteur on the following points:
- The institutionalisation of Water Conferences under the auspices of the UN
- That these Conferences adopt a human rights-based approach
- Broad public participation in these Conferences
- And the participation in these Conferences of local, municipal and community bodies, as well as public service providers.
With some Member States paying increasing attention to the Social Platform, this is a good time to keep on pushing on the items of our agenda, and gain momentum.
For this reason, the Special Rapporteur would like to ask your organization’s support in signing this letter, as well as, in sharing it with your networks and other organizations.
