From the Swiss Blue Communities VSA (Association of Swiss Wastewater and Water Protection Experts) and Eawag – Aquatic Research Institute:

The information flows on.

In 2007, readers of the British Medical Journal voted the Sanitary Revolution , “access to clean drinking water and adequate sanitation,” the most important medical advance since 1840. Many in the USA are directly contributing to this, for our health and the health of our environment.

Wastewater-based monitoring takes advantage of “our system”: we efficiently collect information about the health of the population contained in the wastewater in just a few hours, day in and day out.

This allows SARS-CoV-2 coronaviruses to be detected in wastewater year-round, not just seasonally in winter. Raw wastewater samples from ten large treatment plants distributed across Switzerland represent more than a fifth of the Swiss population. Analyzing these samples provides us with temporally and spatially differentiated insights into four respiratory viruses. The weekly updated dashboard isn’t just for high-risk patients ; take a look yourself.

I am very pleased that wastewater monitoring for pathogens and substances from pharmaceutical and drug use is secured for the long term. Thank you also for maintaining “our system” so well, which allows the information to continue flowing.
