“Water yes, gold no”: Protest in the Dominican Republic against a Canadian mining project.
Hundreds of Dominicans marched in the south of the country on Sunday to protest a project by the Canadian company GoldQuest to exploit various minerals with the government’s approval, a protest that left four uniformed officers injured.
Mining in the Dominican Republic represents approximately 2% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Gold is the main export commodity.
The so-called Romero project focuses on a gold, copper and silver deposit , with reserves equivalent to 1.1 million ounces valued at about $5 billion at current prices, according to GoldQuest Mining Corp.
