The Blue Community welcomes its first partner in Cameroon, Africa: SELAMO.
SELAMO is an acronym and stands for Sustainable Environment for Life And Mobilization. As a non-governmental organization (NGO), it is based on ISO 14001:2004 structure and regulations.
SELAMO has a strong commitment to water as a human right and a common good, not a commodity. The values of the Blue Community align with its work in WASH and integrated water resources management. SELAMO’s desire is to contribute to sustainable, equitable, and inclusive water governance, especially in African contexts.
In its commitment to become a Blue Community, SELAMO seeks the opportunity to connect with a global network of like-minded institutions and practitioners, and join the Blue Community platform to share experiences and lessons from water and sanitation work in developing contexts. Becoming a Blue Community shall also help SELAMO to strengthen its advocacy for public water services and reduced reliance on bottled water.
In return, SELAMO commits to share practical experience from urban and peri-urban water and sanitation systems, to support awareness and education on water conservation, pollution prevention, and public water access, to promote community engagement and locally adapted solutions, and to cContribute to discussions and joint initiatives within the network.
SELAMO’s past efforts include supporting equitable access to safe water and sanitation in underserved communities. Moving forward, SELAMO aims to strengthen advocacy, community awareness, and policy engagement around these rights, supporting inclusive planning approaches that prioritize vulnerable populations.
SELAMO strongly believes that sustainable and equitable water services are best achieved through strong public systems. In its work, SELAMO has engaged with public institutions and local authorities to improve service delivery, especially in urban and peri-urban areas where gaps are most visible.
SELAMO aims to work alongside public actors to strengthen capacity, improve accountability, and promote efficient service models. and to advocate for increased public investment and better coordination across institutions.
SELAMO strongly supports water governance based on equity, sustainability, and environmental protection. In its work, SELAMO has contributed to improving water resource management and raising awareness on pollution prevention in urban and peri-urban settings. As a Blue Community, SELAMO plans to promote integrated water resources management, stronger protection of ecosystems, and community participation in decision-making. SELAMO also aims to support knowledge sharing and capacity building to encourage more sustainable and climate-resilient water systems.
Fonyuy Carlos Bintar, Operations Manager at SELAMO, states:
«With the Blue Community, we want to uphold the core principles: water as a human right, public water services, protection of water resources, and reducing plastic pollution. We want to actively engage in advancing a water-secure and pollution-free future.»
A warm welcome to SELAMO in the global Blue Community. We look forward to learn from and to work with you.
