Great initiative from the City of Zaragoza: strengthening the public water network and urban cooling with new cold water dispensers, fountains, misters, and climate comfort spaces.
The city is adding three chilled water dispensers in Balcón de San Lázaro, Frente Fluvial, and Parque Grande, which join a network of nearly 700 municipal fountains.
This is more than just urban furniture. It’s climate adaptation, public health, and the right to water in public spaces. In a context of increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves, having quality, accessible, and free water available in streets, parks, and plazas is a simple yet highly effective measure.
Moreover, the dispensers are accessible for children and people with reduced mobility, reduce the use of single-use containers, and integrate into the city’s network of climate shelters.
From AEOPAS, we advocate that urban water systems must also be considered at this everyday scale: public fountains, maintenance, shade, urban cooling, hydration, accessibility, and protection of the vulnerable population.
The water transition isn’t just about large infrastructures. It’s also about caring for the city, reducing waste, adapting public spaces to the heat, and placing water at the center of municipal policies.
