Desertification: Act before it’s too late.
On the occasion of World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, celebrated on June 17, environmental specialists are calling for greater awareness of the accelerated land degradation in Burundi. They believe this phenomenon jeopardizes agricultural production and, consequently, the food security of the population.
According to Innocent Banigwaninzigo, an environmental scientist, desertification and drought are no longer distant risks, but a reality already manifesting itself in several regions of the country. “Burundi is not spared. The signs are visible through the severe degradation of the hills, the increasing vulnerability of fields, and the difficulties faced by farmers ,” he explains.
