Empowering Young Water Stewards Through Art, Education, and Climate Action.

In a powerful demonstration of youth engagement for environmental sustainability, Blue Community Mayurbhanj Biological Research (MBR), a member of the Global Environment Facility Civil Society Organization (GEF-CSO) Network, in collaboration with Abhay Dan Trust, New Delhi, successfully organized a One-Day Art Competition and Awareness Programme on Water, Sanitation, and Human Rights at Sri RamChandra Library, Baripada, Odisha.
The event brought together 100 enthusiastic young participants from different schools and communities, creating a vibrant platform for learning, creativity, and environmental stewardship. The participants were divided into two age categories: 50 children below the age of 10 years and 50 children below the age of 17 years. Through art, interactive discussions, and field-based learning activities, the programme encouraged children to explore the interconnected challenges of water security, sanitation, climate change, and environmental conservation.
The programme was graced by distinguished educators, environmental advocates, and community leaders, including Mr. Samir Kumar Sahu, Executive Director of Mayurbhanj Biological Research (MBR); Mr. Suresh Chandra Das, Programme Officer, MBR; Mr. Jayanta Pal; Dr. Banaja Mohanty, Principal of MPC Autonomous College, Baripada; Mrs. Kanika; Mrs. Panati Patnaik; and several dedicated volunteers who contributed to the successful organization of the event.
Access to clean water and sanitation is recognized globally as a fundamental human right and is central to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. However, growing climate risks, environmental degradation, and increasing pressure on freshwater resources continue to threaten communities worldwide. Recognizing the importance of educating future generations, the programme was designed to inspire children to become active participants in water conservation and climate resilience efforts.
A key highlight of the event was a field visit to a nearby water body, where children observed local water resources and learned about their ecological importance. Environmental educators explained the role of wetlands, ponds, rivers, and groundwater systems in sustaining biodiversity, agriculture, and community well-being. Participants were encouraged to understand how human activities, pollution, deforestation, and climate change can affect water availability and quality.
The programme also emphasized the importance of tree plantation as a nature-based solution for climate adaptation and environmental restoration. Children learned how trees contribute to groundwater recharge, improve local microclimates, reduce soil erosion, absorb carbon dioxide, and support biodiversity conservation. These lessons helped participants understand the direct connection between healthy ecosystems and water security.
The art competition provided an engaging platform for children to express their ideas, concerns, and aspirations regarding water conservation, sanitation, environmental protection, and climate action. Through colorful drawings and creative storytelling, participants showcased innovative visions of sustainable communities where clean water, healthy ecosystems, and responsible environmental practices are valued and protected. The artworks reflected remarkable awareness, imagination, and commitment among young participants toward building a more sustainable future.
To recognize and encourage their participation, certificates were awarded to all participants. The certificate distribution ceremony celebrated the enthusiasm, creativity, and environmental commitment demonstrated by the children throughout the programme. By acknowledging every participant, the organizers reinforced the message that every child has an important role to play in protecting natural resources and promoting sustainable development.
The event highlighted the transformative power of environmental education in shaping responsible citizens and future leaders. By combining creative expression with practical learning experiences, the programme successfully fostered awareness of water rights, sanitation, climate resilience, and ecosystem conservation among young people.
