Rethinking wastewater management.

An Eawag project in Bengaluru, India, is opening up new ways to respond to droughts and water scarcity. The focus is on the decentralised reuse of treated wastewater. Technological solutions alone cannot resolve the complex water challenges. Social aspects must be considered, as well.

“In the coming years, many exciting approaches to water reuse will emerge from Bengaluru,” explains Christian Binz. “The city is currently developing solutions that are unique on a global scale and could utlimately serve as an example for cities around the world.” The economic geographer heads the Sustainability Transitions and Innovation Studies group at Eawag, as well as the WaterReuseLab, a project in the city of Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore), home to 15 million people, which suffers from acute water scarcity.
