Introduction

World Environment Day is the world’s largest platform for environmental outreach, bringing together governments, institutions, civil society organizations, communities, and young people to promote environmental protection and sustainable development. Recognizing the urgency of climate change, biodiversity loss, environmental degradation, and increasing ecological challenges, Mayurbhanj Biological Research (MBR), in collaboration with Abhay Dan Trust, GEF Civil Society Organization Members, and Blue Community NET, organized a comprehensive awareness and action programme on the occasion of World Environment Day 2026.

The programme was conducted at *B.B. College, Baiganbadia, Mayurbhanj, with the active participation of **55 graduate students*, faculty members, environmental experts, and community representatives. The event combined environmental education with practical action through plantation activities and demonstrations on sustainable agricultural practices.

Objectives of the Programme

The programme was designed with the following objectives:

* To create awareness about environmental conservation and climate change.
* To encourage youth participation in environmental protection.
* To promote biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration.
* To demonstrate sustainable waste management practices through vermicomposting.
* To encourage plantation and green campus initiatives.
* To foster environmental leadership among students.

Inaugural Session

The programme commenced with a welcome address and introduction to the significance of World Environment Day 2026. Participants were informed about the growing environmental challenges facing the world, including global warming, deforestation, biodiversity loss, pollution, and water scarcity.

In his keynote address, *Mr. Samir Kumar Sahu* emphasized that environmental sustainability is not merely an environmental issue but a social, economic, and humanitarian necessity. He highlighted the need for collective action involving educational institutions, government agencies, civil society organizations, and local communities.

He urged students to become environmental ambassadors capable of inspiring positive change within society. He also stressed the importance of nature-based solutions in addressing climate change and building resilient communities.

Expert Deliberations

Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development

Dr. Rabindra Kumar Mishra delivered an insightful presentation on biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management. He explained how biodiversity supports ecological balance, food security, climate regulation, and human health.

He encouraged students to understand the ecological significance of forests, wetlands, and wildlife habitats and to actively participate in local conservation efforts. His presentation highlighted the importance of protecting indigenous species and restoring degraded ecosystems.

Sustainable Agriculture and Organic Practices

Dr. Sarat Chandra Mohanty discussed sustainable agriculture and the environmental benefits of organic farming. He explained the adverse impacts of excessive chemical fertilizer use and emphasized the role of organic alternatives in improving soil fertility and environmental health.

Special emphasis was given to vermicompost as an environmentally sustainable agricultural input that enhances soil productivity while reducing environmental pollution.

Environmental Education and Community Participation

Dr. Annapurna Dhal conducted an interactive session focusing on environmental awareness, waste reduction, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable resource management. She highlighted the importance of behavioural change and community participation in achieving long-term environmental sustainability.

Vermicomposting Demonstration

A practical demonstration on vermicomposting was organized to provide students with hands-on learning opportunities. Participants learned how biodegradable organic waste can be transformed into nutrient-rich organic manure through the activity of earthworms.

The demonstration emphasized:

Organic waste recycling.
Reduction of environmental pollution.
Improvement of soil fertility.
Promotion of sustainable agriculture.
Low-cost rural livelihood opportunities.

Students showed considerable interest in adopting vermicomposting practices within their homes, educational institutions, and local communities.

Plantation Drive

The plantation activity served as the central feature of the World Environment Day celebration. Students, faculty members, guests, and organizers collectively planted saplings within the college campus.

The accompanying photograph captures this meaningful moment of collective environmental action, where participants united under the banner of the *3rd Year Go Green Campaign Initiative 2026*. The image symbolizes hope, responsibility, environmental leadership, and the shared commitment to building a greener future.

Tree plantation was undertaken with the objective of:

Enhancing local biodiversity.
Increasing green cover.
Supporting carbon sequestration.
Improving air quality.
Strengthening climate resilience.

Participants pledged to nurture the planted saplings and continue supporting environmental restoration initiatives.

Student Participation

More than *55 graduate students* actively participated in all programme activities. Their enthusiastic involvement demonstrated the growing environmental consciousness among youth and their willingness to contribute to climate action and sustainable development.

The students engaged in discussions, plantation activities, practical demonstrations, and environmental awareness sessions, gaining both theoretical knowledge and practical experience.

Conclusion

World Environment Day 2026 served as an inspiring platform for environmental education, community engagement, and climate action. The programme successfully brought together students, academicians, environmental experts, and civil society organizations in a collective effort to promote environmental stewardship and sustainable development.

The event reaffirmed the belief that meaningful environmental change begins with awareness, education, and action. Through expert lectures, practical demonstrations, and plantation activities, participants gained valuable knowledge and motivation to become active contributors to environmental protection.
