Environmental Defenders (ED) Begins Community Forestry Consultations on Ituri’s Lendu Plateau. 

Competition over land and natural resources results in human rights violations and the denial of basic rights such as shelter and food. Land grabbing and invasions contribute to the mass forced eviction of Indigenous Peoples and local communities from their traditional lands and territories and to other gross human rights abuses, violations, killings, and conflicts.

Amid the news of an Ebola outbreak in Ituri Province, there is another story unfolding there that deserves attention. It is a story of hope.

Throughout May, our teams at Environmental Defenders worked in five villages on the Lendu Plateau in Mahagi territory, holding public consultations with 933 community members, including local chiefs, farmers, women, and fishing communities along the Lake Albert escarpment, on how they can use DRC law to gain legal rights over the forests they have protected and inhabited for generations through Local Community Forest Concessions (CFCL).

The goal is to ensure that in the longer run the collective rights of Indigenous and local communities to their land, territories, and natural resources are promoted, respected, and protected in Ituri-DRC.
