Communities do not experience development in sectors.
One thing I continue to reflect on is the difference between how development institutions organise their work and how communities experience everyday life.
Development programmes are often organised into sectors.
Agriculture.
Health.
Education.
Water.
Climate.
Infrastructure.
That structure helps institutions organise expertise, funding, and implementation.
But communities often experience something very different.
For a rural household, these issues are deeply interconnected.
A poor harvest affects household income.
Income influences nutrition.
Nutrition affects health.
Health affects productivity.
Productivity shapes educational opportunities, livelihoods, and long-term resilience.
Perhaps that is why interventions that work well within a single sector sometimes struggle to create lasting change.
Communities experience development as interconnected realities rather than isolated sectors.
The more we understand those connections, the better positioned we are to design solutions that respond to the realities communities face every day.
