In recent months, the protection of water infrastructure in times of armed conflict has continued to feature prominently both in research publications and in public events. This is because in contemporary armed conflicts, water systems are increasingly targeted, manipulated, or incidentally damaged, acting as both a casualty and a weapon of war – with largely undocumented impacts. Although multiple international humanitarian law (IHL) frameworks protect these vital resources, their overall effectiveness is heavily undermined by legal indeterminacies and weak implementation.
