28 July 2026 marks the 16th anniversary of the Human Right to Water and Sanitation (HRWatSan)!
On 28 July 2010, UN Resolution 64/292 was adopted by the 108th plenary session of the UN General Assembly. (see here).
In December this year, the UN is organizing a Water Conference to be held in Abu Dhabi – the 3rd UN Water Conference ever (see here). The preparations are under way and we hope for social and indigenous movements to have a strong voice and make a real difference. After 16 years, it is time for states to comply. We must transition from recognition to realization. In order for the Human Right to Water and Sanitation to be effective, it must become a political priority and be written into every constitution. On our website, you can find a map with detailed information about the status of the HRWatSan in every state worldwide (see here).
To mark World Water Day 2026 (March 22) and in the lead-up to the 2026 UN Water Conference, the Blue Community Network launched a global call to action: HRWatSan2026.
Some 50 institutions and organisations from all around the globe and may individuals have already signed this global call. Add your voice and make sure the call will be heard!
We will keep following the preparations of the UN Water Conference 2026 and hope that turning 16 will give the Human Right to Water and Sanitation a new drive to be realised for all and everywhere.
