The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, says preliminary investigations into the Bille gas spill showed that one of the underground water sources in the community has been contaminated.
Speaking during a visit to the community, the Commission’s Chief Executive, Mr Gbenga Komolafe, represented by the Executive Commissioner for Health, Safety, Environment and Community, Mrs Ejiro Eyesan, said the commission is carrying out a careful and scientific investigation to determine the exact source of the seepage. Mrs Eyesan said preliminary investigations have already been completed, but the commission is taking its time to avoid creating further hazards before any intervention. She added that an international company has been engaged to carry out detailed studies, with fieldwork expected to begin before the end of July.
She said experts from across the oil and gas industry have also been mobilised to support the investigation. Also during the visit, a Federal Government delegation delivered relief materials to the community and promised additional support, including medical outreach services, medical supplies, firefighting equipment, clean water and support for electricity supply. Responding on behalf of the community, the Chairman of the Bille Council of Chiefs, Alabo Okpokia Dokubo, urged the authorities to ensure that their promises are followed by concrete action.
