Development is often measured through statistics.
Poverty rates.
Employment levels.
School enrolment.
Agricultural productivity.
Access to healthcare.
These measures matter because they help us understand progress.
But they rarely tell the whole story.
Behind every statistic are people whose experiences, priorities, and aspirations cannot always be fully captured by numbers alone.
Understanding that story requires looking beyond the statistics to the people behind the numbers.
It requires engaging with communities, listening to their perspectives, and learning how they experience the issues we hope to address.
Statistics help us understand what is happening.
Communities often help us understand why.
Perhaps our understanding of development becomes strongest when evidence and community perspectives are brought together.
