From Dr. Muntasir Alshareef, Professor at the Blue Community / Blue University MTU – Middle Technical University, Baghdad, Iraq:
Greetings from the banks of the Euphrates River!
I am pleased to share photos from our recent field visit to local communities along the Euphrates basin in western Iraq. During this outreach, we engaged directly with local families, youth, and children to bridge academic knowledge with grassroots action and foster environmental awareness from the ground up.
Key Initiatives & Community Outreach:
Fostering Environmental Stewardship: Engaging local youth and children in interactive discussions on protecting river ecosystems and understanding water as a shared public good.
Support & Educational Resource Distribution: Providing essential school supplies and storage units to local families, reinforcing community trust and supporting long-term educational access.
Grassroots Blue Community Principles: Translating global water ethics and ecosystem-based solutions into practical, everyday habits for rural agricultural communities.
Empowering the Next Generation: Building local capacity and environmental awareness among children to ensure sustainable water practices carry forward across generations.
Rooting our efforts in local engagement is essential to ensuring that water protection, environmental rights, and community resilience are sustained over the long term.
As part of our commitment to embedding Blue Community values within local governance and social structures, we held a direct dialogue with senior tribal leaders, local dignitaries, and community elders in western Iraq.
In rural communities, traditional councils and local leadership play a pivotal role in driving social change, resolving resource disputes, and setting community norms. Engaging directly with these key figures allows us to bridge traditional heritage with modern sustainability practices.
Key Highlights of the Engagement:
Engaging Community Leadership: Partnering with tribal elders and local decision-makers to champion water stewardship, environmental preservation, and ecosystem protection.
Blending Tradition with Modernity: Integrating long-standing cultural values of water protection with modern environmental concepts and sustainable water management techniques.
Promoting Water Ethics: Emphasizing the principles of the Blue Community—recognizing water as a public good and a fundamental human right—within community gatherings and regional dialogue.
Strengthening Grassroots Support: Securing institutional and local endorsement to facilitate upcoming environmental initiatives, educational outreach, and nature-based solutions across the region.
Working through established community structures ensures that our collective efforts toward water sustainability are deeply rooted, culturally respected, and long-lasting.
