Population and Development Initiative (PDI) at a Glance
Population and Development Initiative – PDI was established by agents of change in 2020 and registered in 2021 as a national NGO with registration number 00NGO/R/1566. PDI operates in Kigoma, Geita and Morogoro regions in Tanzania.
PDI works in thematic areas of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Environmental Education, Health and Nutrition, Economic Empowerment and Human Rights and Good Governance. PDI is aware of various reports in Tanzania which indicate that most children, youth and women face various social and economic challenges which hinder them to reach their potential. These challenges include water poverty, unemployment, energy poverty, Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC), inadequate skills, climate change, malnutrition and limited health services although they are available resources and opportunities, among others.
PDI provides skills, capacity, networks, information and resources needed to address these challenges to support development of children, youth and children among mining and fishing communities as well as other challenging contexts in Tanzania. PDI uses evidence-based advocacy, social accountability monitoring tools, educative materials, capacity building, dialogues, school clubs, community of practice, community reports and networks of agents of change to serve communities.
PDI is a member of various national and international networks such as Blue Community Network (BCN), End Water Poverty (EWP), Sanitation and Water for All, Gender and Water Alliance (GWA), Break Free From Plastics (BFFP), Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA), Plastic Pollution Coalition (PPC), Inclusive Green Economy East Africa Tanzania (IGEN EA Tanzania), Global Mercury Partnership, Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA), European Partnership for Responsible Minerals (EPRM), HakiRasilimali, Civicus and Movendi International; the spaces which we learn from others and share various socioeconomic, environmental and human rights issues in Tanzania and across the globe.
