Based in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India, Jai Bharati Shiksha Kendra (JBSK) is a non-governmental, non-political, non-religious, and voluntary organization dedicated to the welfare of the poor, the underprivileged, and the socially marginalized.
JBSK promotes human rights, dignity, and gender equality by enhancing the social, economic, and human potential of the underprivileged.
After working primarily with marginalized rural tribal communities for the past 35 years, JBSK has focused on river rejuvenation with community participation for the last six years.
JBSK states: «Since the river belongs to the community, the community itself must take the lead in restoring it. Saints, virtuous citizens, and the community must step forward, dedicating their bodies, minds, and labor to river rejuvenation.
In India, water accumulated by nature over millennia has been used without restriction, yet there are no mandatory provisions for replenishing it; consequently, users have acted with complete irresponsibility, even though falling water levels must be restored to their former state. Those who utilize stored water must, under all circumstances, bear the responsibility of ensuring rainwater percolates into the ground. That is why we need the support of like-minded people.»
JBSK advocates that all relevant bodies—ranging from district-level municipal corporations and municipalities to panchayats, the Water Conservation Department, and other government agencies—should obtain an affidavit from every borewell user. This affidavit must confirm that the user has made adequate arrangements to channel rainwater into their borewell. Only then should permission to extract water be granted.
In its commitment to the Blue Community, JBSK affirms:
Water and sanitation are both vital human rights and must always be accessible.
Water cannot be manufactured; It is a gift of nature; therefore, every possible effort must be made to preserve its utility so that every drop of water can be put to public use.
