PRISM

PRISM, the Professional Institute for Development and Socio-Environmental Management, was established 25 years ago in the Bengal region of Eastern India. It’s head office is located 25 kms away from Greater Kolkata, South Bengal. In North Bengal, 700 kms away from Kolkata, PRISM has another campus adjacent to Jaldapara National Park.

In its South Bengal office, PRISM has been using Surface Water and in 365 days it did not extract a single drop of ground water. All needs (bathing, cleaning vegetables and fruits, cooking, washing dishes or clothes, drinking, etc. for average 15 people per day for the entire year) are catered. In the North Bengal campus, PRISM has been using water from two dug wells, organising programs for at least 150 children 4 times every year, and with girls and women every year almost for 4 times and women entrepreneurs run Experience Vacation Centre. In 365 days, PRISM here is catering to almost 5000 people without exploiting a drop of ground water.

In its commitment to the Blue Community, PRISM states: «Our agenda is to consider Water and Sanitation as basic human rights. We have developed a safe treatment and storage facility for a household, for community level and it’s also developed for surface water treatment. We would like to introduce our approach globally, which is low cost and easily managed by the communities and maintainable.»

PRISM also works on generating awareness on menstrual hygiene management and the concept of right to safe menstruation as well as to provide low-cost and easily doable solutions on absorbents, working on these lines in India, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Kenya, Nepal, Sudan etc. countries. One PRISM project was awarded by the Humanitarian Innovation Fund (HIF).
