“Water will be supplied to the EU as far as possible.” Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo said the technical areas have been checking how much water is available in the dams to determine how much will be delivered.
President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo spoke about the water treaty with the United States, stressing that the fluid will be delivered ‘as much as possible’ without jeopardising Mexico’s supply.
As part of her morning conference, the President said that in the negotiations, the technical areas had looked at how much water was available in the dams to determine how much would be delivered. She explained:
“Let’s put it this way, the amount of water will be delivered as far as it can be delivered, first we have to guarantee the right to irrigation for agriculture and different areas of the country.”
Speaking about the negotiations, the Head of State pointed out that “it was agreed to deliver water within the possible and feasible limits”, with the sole aim of complying with the 1944 Treaty.
“The part of the water that had not been delivered to Texas for years was due to the drought, so a calculation was made of how much liquid there was in the dams and how much could be delivered without endangering our country,” she said.
Sheinbaum Pardo said she was working with the governor of Coahuila to modernise the very old supply networks: “We are supporting the Laguna”, she said, “we are supporting the Laguna”.
Finally, the country’s first female president said that in order to reach the agreement, talks had been held with the governors of Chihuahua, Tamaulipas and Coahuila in order to determine the ideal strategy for fulfilling the above-mentioned objectives without leaving the entities unprotected, and it was also agreed that there would be an annual meeting to review the situation. She said:
“We all agreed, and in that sense it took several weeks of work to come up with a scheme that would provide the United States with the water we have to give, but would not put us at risk.”
Water treaty?
The 1944 Water Treaty is an agreement signed between Mexico and the United States to share the waters of the Bravo and Colorado Rivers. The treaty stipulates that our country must provide two trillion 185,000 litres every five years, of which it has provided only a third in the period 2020-2025 due to the drought in northern Mexico.
