The Blue Community Network welcomes the organisation Safe Water & Sustainable Hygiene Initiative (SAWASHI) from Kakamega, Kenya, in the blue family.
SAWASHI works to improve access to safe, potable water for vulnerable communities. It designs and implements sustainable WaSH solutions in schools, healthcare facilities, places of worship, and public markets, while strengthening existing water infrastructure and building the capacity of local project management committees. SAWASHI also advances environmental conservation through tree planting and watershed restoration to protect water sources and enhance climate resilience.
Eugene Mwavali Amboga, Executive Director of SAWASHI, writes in the commitment to the Blue Community:
SAWASHI seeks to become a Blue Community because the principles of the Blue Community movement closely align with our mission of advancing equitable access to safe water and sanitation. We believe that water is a fundamental human right and a shared public resource that must be protected and managed sustainably for present and future generations. Through our work in rural Kenya, SAWASHI supports communities to develop and maintain reliable water systems, strengthen local water governance, and promote good hygiene and sanitation practices. (…) We aim to promote the values of the Blue Community movement locally by encouraging responsible water stewardship, strengthening community management of water resources, and advocating for the recognition of water and sanitation as human rights.
SAWASHI commits to strengthening of publicly accountable and community-managed water systems to ensure water services remain accessible, equitable, and sustainable. Our goal is to promote water services that are transparently managed, locally owned, and aligned with public interest.
