Butanyerera: surviving, adapting, and preserving in the face of climate change challenges.
In the Butanyerera region of northern Burundi, communities face the daily realities of drought, a lack of clean water, and precarious living conditions.
On the hills of Kirundo, water can be a scarce resource. Families turn to the lakes to meet their needs, while poor harvests undermine livelihoods, driving some men to seek work elsewhere.
Yet, the story of Butanyerera is also one of resilience. Faced with adversity, communities are organizing: protecting lakes, planting trees, developing savings initiatives, and seeking solutions to improve their living conditions.
Balancing environmental protection with the need to survive raises a key question: how can natural resources be preserved while enabling the people who depend on them to live with dignity?
Through the personal accounts of local residents—including young girls, women, fishermen, and community and environmental leaders—this documentary explores the realities of a region grappling with climate and social challenges.
