Water and liquid manure: Overproduction is polluting the water in the canton of Lucerne.
Livestock farming in the Canton of Lucerne is reflected in the water. Clean water is essential for life, health, and the economy. Watercourses show pollution not just as short-term, isolated incidents, but primarily as a slow, systematic transfer of nutrients from agriculture into lakes, streams, rivers – and into the groundwater layers below.
Manure and slurry from intensive livestock farming are central to this. The situation becomes particularly problematic when livestock farming is regionally prevalent and only limited areas are available for nutrient utilization. Furthermore, as is the case in the Canton of Lucerne, when some feed is imported, the nutrient cycle may function economically from an agricultural perspective, but ecologically it becomes unbalanced: Nutrients are produced locally as excrement, but cannot be returned to the same extent without some finding its way into the water system.
This harmful cause-and-effect chain is a key reason to support the Reuss Initiative.
