Consequences of the lack of drinking water in the Kabimba settlement in Kalemie.
The town of Kabimba in Kalemie, Tanganyika Province, has been without drinking water for several days. According to local sources, many of the pipes are worn out. The population is forced to draw water from Lake Tanganyika, rivers and untreated wells, with the risk of contracting water-borne diseases. Faced with this situation, the head of the Lubanday district is appealing to the authorities to find a solution.
In the Kabimba district, water rarely flows from the few taps. The population waits until late in the evening for drinking water, which is supplied by the Chinese company GLC. Regideso is not present in this part of Tanganyika Province.
The head of the Lubanday district, Michée Saké, explains:
“The people of Kabimba district only get water from the tap in Lubanday district, so they stay up all night to get water. You have to be there from 2 to 5 in the morning to get water. And there are only two taps that work. We are asking the administrator of the Kalemie area to intervene in this matter so that we can have enough drinking water. The people of Kabimba have suffered enough.”
The consequences of this situation are many: much of the population of Kabimba drinks water from untreated wells, from Lake Tanganyika and from other rivers.
In addition, according to some local sources, the population fears a resurgence of water-borne diseases.
