Access to drinking water: Togo updates its 2025 target.
Togo is reducing its target for access to drinking water. Initially set at 85% by the end of 2025, the national coverage target has been adjusted to 72%, a reduction of 13 percentage points. This revision is reported in the Citizen’s Budget recently published by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
However, the country will see a slight improvement at the end of 2024, with a coverage rate of 70%, compared to 69% in 2023. According to the official document consulted by Togo First, the coverage rate in rural areas should reach 79% in 2025, compared to 76.51% the previous year. In semi-urban areas, it should rise from 60% to 63%, while in urban areas, coverage should increase from 72% to 79%.
To achieve these targets, a number of ongoing projects will be continued. The government plans to construct 388 boreholes equipped with human-powered pumps (PMH) in the Kara and Savanes regions, at an estimated cost of CFAF 3 billion. In addition, 205 stand-alone water points (PEA) will be installed at an estimated cost of CFAF 4 billion.
Although no details have been provided on this downward revision, the goal of universal coverage by 2030 remains in sight. To this end, the government intends to continue its efforts in 2025 with a provisional budget of FCFA 19 billion, which is included in the finance law currently being implemented.
