Community engagement is more than consultation.
While community engagement is widely recognised as an important part of development practice, meaningful engagement goes beyond inviting communities to meetings, collecting their perspectives, or validating decisions that have already been made.
It begins with understanding how communities experience the issues we hope to address.
It creates opportunities for communities to help define problems, shape priorities, and contribute to the design of solutions.
When community engagement is approached in this way, participation becomes more meaningful because it is built on listening, trust, and shared understanding rather than consultation alone.
For me, community engagement is not simply about ensuring communities are heard.
It is about creating meaningful opportunities for communities to influence the decisions that affect their lives.
Communities are not simply beneficiaries of development.
They are partners in shaping it.
