UN special rapporteur welcomes Egypt’s Haya Karima gains, urges publication of water-test results.
Egypt’s Haya Karima (or “Decent Life” in English) presidential initiative “goes in the right direction,” the UN special rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation said in a report recognizing the country’s gains in sanitation coverage while recommending wider public access to water-quality data.
Pedro Arrojo Agudo submitted the report to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva after he visited Egypt in February, and the UNHRC discussed it this week. Egypt submitted a written response in July, describing the report as “a useful basis for continued dialogue and technical cooperation” while outlining its position on water services, quality, investment, and the country’s limited water resources.
