Berlin Water Works is taking over the management of all 2,091 emergency wells.
Berlin’s public water utility BWB is taking over the management of all 2,091 emergency wells in the state of Berlin. This includes 901 federal wells and 1,190 state wells, as announced by the water works in mid-July. According to the information provided, the tasks of the state-owned company include taking an inventory of the wells, maintaining them, operating them and, if necessary, repairing them. These wells serve as a precautionary measure in the event of a disaster or defence situation.
The gradual takeover of maintenance and care of the emergency wells, also known as swing pumps, is based on a contract between BWB and the state of Berlin. The swing pumps in the two pilot districts of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and Spandau have already been almost entirely recorded, and the Wasserbetriebe team is gradually checking the pumps in other districts to ensure they are in working order. Until now, the wells have been maintained under the direction of the districts. According to the BWB, the emergency wells do not provide water of drinking quality. In the event of a disaster, however, the water can be made drinkable by using disinfection tablets.
