March for Water and Climate in the Blue Community / Blue City of Brussels on World Water Day.
Sunday 22 March is World Water Day, and the WHO estimates that between 1.5 and 2 million people die each year from diseases linked to unsafe water (2025). A recent UN report highlights a “global failure” in the management of this resource, characterised by growing scarcity and persistent inequalities in access.
The world consumes more fresh water than it is able to renew.
In response to this catastrophe, pollution, overconsumption and the privatisation of this common good, which was listed on the stock exchange in 2020, we are organising a European march for water and the climate, with a gathering at Place Albertine at 1.30 p.m., followed by a show entitled “Where is the blue going?” and a march to the European quarter at Place Jean Rey in Schuman.
In the run-up to the UN Water Summit in December 2026 we want a different global water policy that recognises water as a universal right and a global common good, rather than a commodity or financial capital.
We want to challenge the European Commission on its inadequate and commercial strategy for water, which is considered an economic good. Under pressure from polluting lobbies in agriculture and industry, water quality standards are also increasingly being called into question, accentuating the presence of nitrates, pesticides and PFAS…
At the local level, in the face of rising water prices, we want water to remain a right for all Brussels residents and for the public company Vivaqua, which is in serious difficulty, to be refinanced by the Brussels Region.
It will also be a march for the climate and for ending our dependence on fossil fuels, because climate change is seriously altering the water cycle, increasing shortages and the severity of floods and droughts. Rising temperatures accelerate evaporation, reduce glaciers and snow cover, while ocean acidification threatens marine ecosystems. This crisis exacerbates water scarcity, threatening drinking water supplies and food security.
